i think it is a bed warmer you put hot coals from the fire place in it then rub the pan over your sheets to warm the bed be for go to bed for the night

if its about 6 inched its a candle or oil burner canned type.. for heating up a fondue or warming plate

No markings but I was able to get the top off and inside was a can of Sterno canned heat cooking fuel

If it contains sterno it is to heat a chaffing dish or to place under a pan to keep food warm. You would not place sterno in your bed.

Thats right its a bed warmer, i went to columbia tenn, and went thru one of the famuis people from the very old days cant remember who, i think it was a president or something, but they had one in there, and thats what it said it was for. it was back when i was young. and my memory on names is bad. but i remember the story about it, it was like back in the civilwar. or earler. and yes they put coal in it, someone must have used it for something else, if there was fuel in it.
