The listing, Vintage Milk Glass Hen/ Chicken on a Nest Covered Dish has ended.
VERY nice, old covered dish in the form of a hen on a nest. Made of bright white milk glass with cold painted red accents. The "nest" part actually looks like a basket with a woven design. Measures 4-1/2" long x 3-1/2" high when closed. The dish is 1-1/2" deep. This piece is in PERFECT condition. No chips, cracks, etc. Bid with confidence!

Up against what I've been seeing out in the markets this is not perfect- it is PRISTINE ! As far as I'm concerned the only way it could be any better is a timewarp to go back and but it when it was new.
My Mom had one of these & it was passed down to me no this is not vintage, the paint from the hen's tail is not there & the eyes & beek should also have paint on them. thought I would pass that on to you good luck
There are several different kinds of these. Not all of them have the cold paint on the eyes, beak and tail. I'm thinking maybe the newer ones have all that paint, buy not the older ones. I'm an antique dealer.......I know it's not 100 yrs old, but it IS an older piece, "vintage", maybe from the '60d or ealry '70s. Many glass companies bought the old molds from old companies and continue making the same things today.
Okay everybody calm down.... I called my sister who has one identical to this and will not give it to her loving baby sister until the will is read. She got hers from a person at her bridal shower in 1972. I believe the accepted age for vintage is it has to be 25yrs. or older. It is a relatively recent term- back when I was selling antiques 80yrs. was just close enough and everything else was just filler or outright junk. If I knew then...............Oh well, live and learn!
thanks for the dating of it........nice to know I was "right on the money". Most antique malls call themselves "Antiques & Collectibles" malls now........cover all the bases. Most people are more interested in finding useful objects these days, not just pretty antiques they can't touch. I usually stick to a pre-1960s rule for our space in malls. B ut there are a LOT of newer buyers out there who find the '80s extremely interesting! *sigh* Makes me feel really old...........
me again-I forgot the also newer term "authenic reproduction" is a newer copy poured or pressed from original antique molds. Now I'm done,I'm back on top and I',m out! [i really want my sis to live forever]
I don't believe that it was made as a butter dish, but I don't see why it couldn't be used as one! When washing, though, you MUST be careful with the red on it. The "cold paint" is not fired on and will wash off if it gets too wet and you rub it.
