this isn't a self-healing mat? could I use an exacto knife on this?

No it is not self heating. As far a a exacto knife goes I wouldn't suggest it but I guess it. Would be up to you if you wanted to take a chance of it messing it up. The reason I say this is I don't know the difference in the two and on the mat the caution reads “ This mat is designed for use with OLFA rotary cutters and blades only. Knives with a fixed clade may damage this mat.”
