Bank of Upper Canada – One Cent Bank Token 1852 – 166 Years Old

The winner of this auction will receive this 160 plus year old St. George the Dragon Slayer 1852 Bank Token shown in the attached photos. This coin is in poor condition; the date is readable, some letters are not readable and its slightly bent.

When Upper and Lower Canada were united in 1841, only the Bank of Montreal had the right to issue copper tokens (until 1848). Then between 1850 and 1857 the Bank of Upper Canada (established in 1821) issued penny and halfpenny copper tokens. I kind of think of them as being similar to US Hard Times or Civil War Tokens that were minted by private companies because of the shortage of coins. The winner of this auction will receive the English Coin shown in the attached photos.
