This is a very rare and interesting 1st edition religious cloth hardcover book published in 1876 by the famous Reverend Gilmour, containing both Bible and American history for teaching in Catholic schools.

It is entitled "Catholic National," Fifth Reader, by Rev. Richard Gilmour, published by Benziger Bros., from the Catholic National Series. It is full of fascinating historical information, as well as several beautiful engravings, with the internal pages being very readable.

Besides the religious material contained inside, other topics in the book listed include Origin and the Results of the Crusades, Primitive Habits in New Amsterdam, The Mammoth Cave of Kentucky, The Pyramids, Andrew Jackson as a Boy, The Yo Semite Valley, Oliver Hazard Perry and the Battle of Lake Erie, and much more.

Although the ornate decorated cover has heavy wear, as shown, and there are some light pencil marks (most of them inside the covers), the majority of the pages are very readable without writing, folds, or significant tears noted. It is also entirely still bound with just the hinges cracked except I think the last page might be missing, and light yellowing/foxing typical for age.

Otherwise, the book is solid and in good condition internally for being over 135 years old - a wonderful historical scarce vintage first edition book that would make great reading and be appreciated by anyone who enjoys old and rare books.
