Bank of Montreal – One Half Cent Bank Token 1837 – 182 Years Old

The winner of this auction will receive the 182 year old 1837 Bank Token shown in the attached photos. This token was minted in 1837 before Canada became a federation. The government did not supply enough coinage to support commerce, so the banks began minting small denomination coins. They were struck during the rebellion of Robert Nelson and Louis-Joseph Papineau against the British and were called a bouquet tokens as the obverse featured a bouquet of rosebuds, wheat, and shamrocks with the lettering: TRADE & AGRICULTURE / LOWER CANADA. The reverse features the value surrounded by wreath; cherry leaves to left; palm leaves to right, and the lettering: BANK TOKEN / MONTREAL / UN SOUS (1 Half Penny)
