Description

The listing, Vintage Religious Pendants has ended.

These are three different religious pendants which I pulled out of a collection of older jewelry I inherited. Two of them have Italy written on the back side...The Cross and the small oval one in picture #6. The cross and the larger oval are not magnetic. I believe the larger oval pendant in picture 2 and 3 may be pewter with copper, as there is a pretty reddish copper strand that runs up the seam of her gown and in her hair. This pendant reads as follows in the front: "Oh Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee...and then there is a date of 1830 on the very bottom. On the backside of the same pin, it reads: Communion Breakfast 1954...Gift of Burns Brothers...together with an assortment of symbols. See picture #3.
The small pendant is magnetic and has a pretty floral engraving on the back side with the inscription of "Pray for us"...and it says Italy on the bottom.
The cross is not magnetic and has Italy on the bottom backside. There is writing on the front side, however I am not sure what it says. (It might be Latin...but I'm not sure).
I'm not Catholic and didn't want to just get rid of them. I have a feeling there is a good home out and a special person that may appreciate these.
Good Luck and Enjoy!

Lovely items! FYI, you are correct -- the words on the crucifix are Latin: "Ecce lignum crucis in quo salus mundi," which translates, "Behold the wood of the cross, on which was hung the Savior of the world." Also, the larger pendant with Mary is known as the Miraculous Medal, and the smaller pendant pictures St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits (Society of Jesus). Peace!

You're very welcome! A couple other things -- the year 1830 on the front of the Miraculoua Medal refers to when Mary appeared to St. Catherine Laboure in the convent where she lived in Paris, France. But the "1954 Communion Breakfast Gift of the Burns Brothers" inscription on the back is really neat -- it means that the Burns Brothers, whoever they were, had a batch of Miraculous Medals specially made with that inscription for some parish's communion breakfast in 1954. Regular Miraculous Medals do not have any special inscription like that, but instead have the image below the inscription (the M with the cross, the stars, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary) covering the entire back side of the medal. Very cool! There's lots of great info on the Miraculous Medal on the internet, and there's a neat Miraculous Medal shrine in Philadelphia, PA if any of you ever find yourselves out that way. Catholic or not, it's really great to learn about, I think. :) god bless you, too!

Again...Much Thanks for the information. I must say...you peaked my interest so much that I did a little checking myself on the internet and found it all quite interesting. It's amazing not only how much history is behind this pendant but also the wonderful story of St. Catherine Laboure and how this pendant came to be. I'm from the West Coast but did make it to Pittsburgh, PA about 5-6 years ago and loved it. Perhaps on a future road trip, we will add Philadelphia to our list and make it out to visit the shrine. I have found all of this so interesting and appreciate having learned what these represent.
Thanks so much again for the info!

You're welcome -- so glad you enjoyed the story of St. Catherine Laboure and the Miraculous Medal! I'm a West Coaster myself, but lived near Pittsburgh for several years. If you're ever in Pittsburgh again, there's a very cool little chapel called St. Anthony's Chapel that has thousands of relics of all sorts, and if you make a Philadelphia trip, there are a bunch of stop-worthy shrines in the area in addition to Miraculous Medal! I've also visited the shrines of St. Gianna Molla, St. John Neumann, St. Katharine Drexel, and Our Lady of Czestachowa, and they were all very interesting and beautiful. Blessings!

Oh, hey! I just found something fun -- if you do a Google search for "Burns Brothers 1954," the first result is a link to a picture of 3 men. I wonder if that is them?? :)

It's hard to say whether they are or not. I did a little research myself and found some Burns Brothers out of New Jersey that run a mausoliem at the Holy Cross Cemetary and there was an article written about "A Day in the Life of the Burns Brothers"...which can be googled. They have even made markers for some famous people, but it's hard to know whether or not they are the same ones related to the ones on the pendant or if the Burns Brothers were someone totally different. It could be anyones guess.

Ah, interesting! Maybe whoever ends up with the medal can get in touch with the man who posted the pic of the 3 Burns Brothers in 1954 to see if there's any connection there, or with the marker-making modern Burns Bros. Peace!
