The cartridge has a CR2032 watch battery inside that is needed to store memory, if it's not working the game does not safe your progress. You need to replace the battery. It's a little complicated because the screw it an odd shape, but you can use needle-nose pliers. I've even seen someone use the body of a Bic pen :D, but I've never tried it myself.

The battery being dead has nothing to do with how it works, only how it saves - the two are separate issues. It plays great, turns on without problems and doesn't cut out or anything. Its one problem is saving and that can be fixed if your willing to do so.
