This is a 1977-1978 telephone director of Plains, Georgia, home of President Jimmy Carter, with his photo on the cover. It was signed on 11/17/80 by Georgia state senator Hugh Carter, Jimmy's cousin.
Hugh Alton Carter Sr., was a former Georgia state legislator and businessman who
had a central role in the early campaigns of his first cousin Jimmy Carter and turned his
store into a center of Jimmy Carter lore.
Mr. Carter, a large-scale worm farmer and antiques dealer, succeeded his cousin
Jimmy in the State Senate and held on to the seat for 14 years until he stepped down
in 1981.
Mr. Carter turned the family's general merchandise store into Hugh Carter's Antique Shop, a tourist mecca during the Carter Presidency. Along with Carter trinkets and memorabilia, he dispensed local lore and political philosophy to visiting reporters. He retired from the business in 1996. He died on June, 24 1999.
Telephone book is in good (not mint) condition, with some chipping along ith cover edges and foxing and yellowing on inside pages. Book includes ads for Billy Carter (Jimmy's infamous brother). Also, tucked inside, is an advertising piece for the Carter Worm Farm!
