The listing, SAINT BENEDICT MEDAL "Jubilee Medal of 1880" a Prayer of Excorcism, Strength PAX~Free Ship has ended.
This is a Lovely ST BENEDICT MEDAL...the "Jubilee Medal of 1880" Different features of the very old Medal's history such as the Capital Letters, around the Cross & on the reverse side, meanings, were unknown. I believe I purchased this Medal, as I do most of mine, in NE Washington, DC at the Basillica, Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
I cannot tell you it's "metal", I have had it for a while. I do Not believe it to be Sterling Silver, as I can find No readable markings, with my (not great) Magnifier. But, you never know, it may have some silver ratio?
It Does Not stick to a Magnet. It remains in very nice condition. It is Not a Light-weight Medal, weighs 3 grams. The "bail" is part of the medal, which Measures: Height:(including it's bail) 14/16" Width is 3/4"
The Latin Letters, St Benedict, the Raven are really nicely detailed. A meaningful Medal. If you would like to know the Meaning of all the Lettering, etc. feel free to ask.
" In 1647 a manuscript dating back to 1415 was found at the Abbey of Metten in Bavaria, giving an explanation of the letters. They are the initial letters of a Latin prayer of exorcism against Satan."
'These features were finally incorporated in a newly designed medal struck in 1880 under the supervision of the monks of Montecassino, Italy, to mark the 1400th anniversary of the birth of St. Benedict."
The medal is a prayer of exorcism against Satan, a prayer for strength in time of temptation, a prayer for peace among ourselves and among the nations of the world, a prayer that the Cross of Christ be our light and guide, a prayer of firm rejection of all that is evil, a prayer of petition that we may with Christian courage "walk in God's
ways, with the Gospel as our guide," as St. Benedict
urges us.
Thanks for Looking & HAPPY BIDDING:) If you have wanted to find this Medal, and it is a nice one. I am adding a GIN Option, so you will Not miss it!
