Description

The listing, Battle of Gettysburg Steel Plate Engraving Picture has ended.

Rare 1865 steel engraved picture print titled " Battle of Gettysburg-Final Charge of the Union Forces At Cemetery Hill"
Under the picture title at bottom of the page in very small printing is "Engraving according to Act of Congress Dec.AD 1865 by the American Publishing Com. the Clerks Office of the District Court of Connecticut"
The print is 9 inches wide and just short of 6 inches high. The engraving was probably used in an expensive limited edition of a Civil War book of the time. Addition prints were made and sold individually. The individual prints were made with the plate that made the prints for the book until the images would blur as plate got wore, normally total printing was a thousand or two pictures. The picture shows browning age spots on the high grade paper stock and have darkened scan to show more clearly the brown aging spots on the otherwise excellent picture nearly 150 years old. The picture appears to have been cut off a bit short at bottom and could have been print rejected for book use or just badly cut for secondary market. The very sharp lines and detail would indicate it was an early print from the steel plate engraving.
The picture is unframed and unmatted but would look great matted and framed. The perfect gift for the Civil War or history fan during this the 150 anniversary of the Civil War.

To more clearly see the picture pleas enlarge. Remember this scan was set darker to more clearly show the brown age spots that exist on the print. The actual picture is lighter and lines of the engraving are much sharper than appear in the scanned picture.

The American Publishing Company of Connecticut were the major publishers of author Mark Twain's books and many of the early Civil War histories. The print was part of a collection of Civil War prints owned by my aunt and came into my possession in the 1960's. She aquired the prints in the early part of the 20th century.

NOTE--This is not a lithograph or modern re-print of the picture but a print made from the original limited number of prints from the original steel plate engraving.
