Description

The listing, Carved Paktong Chinese Panels has ended.

I just listed one of these sets.. This is the last set I have..

I can not say for absolutle sure, but believe these are carved from a metal known as Paktong..

These were carved from a copper alloy with nickel and zinc. The usual formulation is 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc.

Nickel silver is named for its silvery appearance, but even though the Chainese charactors on the back, read "pure silver", they in fact contains no elemental silver.

The name "German silver" refers to its development by 19th-century German metalworkers in imitation of this Chinese alloy known as paktong.

Very heavy for their size at 5 3/4" X 1 7/8" x 3/16" each .. Over a half pound weight each..

Are these carved only on one side, or both? Would you mind posting a photo of the reverse side, whether or not it is carved?

I do not know what each of the carved scenes represent.. Although, you can bet there is a story behind each..

My thought was that they might be strictly decoritive.. A friend of mine thinks they may be scroll weights.. Not the kind that hang, but more like paper wheights used to hold a scroll open on a flat surface..
