The listing, CIVIL WAR STEEL PLATE UNION GENERALS PICTURE has ended.
An 1865 steel plate engraved printing of Civil War Union Generals. Featured in the engraving are Generals Fremont, Rosecrans, Mitchell, Banks, Pope, Hooker, and Meade (of Gettysburg fame). At the bottom of the picture are ribbons with words Union Generals in them. In very small print under Generals Mitchell and Hooker are the words, "Entered according to Act of Congress Dec AD 1865 by the American Publishing Co. in the Clerks Office of the District Court of Connecticut."
The engraved picture was probably made originally for use in a limited edition Civil War book and was an extra or one of a few additional pictures run off for individual sale. The nearly 150 year old engraved picture shows little wear and only slight spots of aging (primarily on right side near Gen. Hookers picture and to lesser degree to right of Gen. Pope's picture.)
The engraving bearing seven of the early Union Generals is unique and rare. The picture measures 5 1/4 x 9 inches and is unmatted and unframed. Please enlarge picture to appreciate the quality of this picture. (I have darkened the photo scan to more clearly note the slight color aging of the paper on the right hand side noted above.)
This is one of the few engravings showing all seven of the famous Union Generals on one picture. The American Publishing Co. published many limited edition Civil War books and later was a major publisher of the works of Mark Twain.
