2017 49c Henry David Thoreau

Henry David Thoreau valued simple living, nature and the importance of protesting injustice through civil disobedience. As oneof America’s most famous transcendentalists, his works have influenced some of the greatest leaders in modern history.

Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts, and spent nearly all his life there. For several years he lived with fellow transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson. The two men became lifelong friends, and Emerson was one of Thoreau’s biggest influences. Emerson even allowed Thoreau to build a house and live on his land near Walden Pond for over two years. It was thereThoreau did the research for his famous novel, Walden.

Thoreau’s works were overlooked during his lifetime, but had a big impact down the road. Mahatma Gandhi, John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., were just a few who were influenced by him. King once said, “The teachings of Thoreau came alive in our civil rights movement... [our actions] are outgrowths of Thoreau’s insistence that evil must be resisted and that no moral man can patiently adjust to injustice.”

Thoreau unknowingly helped shape the history of the United States. His teachings inspired activists and leaders and helped guide them to make America what it is today.
