There's a kit you can buy, I bought mine on eBay. You scratch the piece with a file, then use a drop of a special acid. That's how you test.

If it turns brown, it's silver, if it turns green, it's not. That's hue I know it's plate. The surface turned brown, but when I scratched it, it turned green.
