The listing, Blue Agave Baby, last one for now . . . has ended.
Agave americana. Plants grow slowly to 14 feet or so. The bloom at maturity--anywhere from 15 - 35 years and their bloom stalk reaches upward of 25 feet! The main plant dies back after blooming, but the off sets live on.
These plants are traditional Native American sources of food, fiber, needles and hooks, and a sweetener which was tapped from the flowering stalks or baked out of the roasting heart. The thorns and hooks are formidable, and the sap from the leaves can be caustic and can cause rashes and irritation. These should not be planted in the ground unless you have plenty of room, and thick long sleeves, sturdy gloves, and eye protection should be worn when pruning or removing leaves to process fiber.
I will send winner one baby similar to the one in the photo. The adult plant pictured is the mama!
