Evelyn works as a housewife in a Birmingham, Alabama nursing home, where she meets an elderly resident named Ninny Threadgoode. The two form a bond and Ninny begins to tell Evelyn her life story over the next few days as Evelyn returns care for her. Ninny’s story of her youth first budded and took place between the first and second World Wars. Ninny begins her story with the young Idgie Threadgoode, who was very closed to Ninny’s older brother. After her brother died in an accidental train accident, Idgie became very depressed and reclusive. Her family asked Buddy’s past girlfriend, Ruth, to pay a visit to comfort her. The two had a rocky start that eventually grew into a close friendship. Ruth moves to marry and live with a man out of state who eventually began to physically abuse her after she became pregnant. Ninny helps her friend get away and gives her refuge in her home, and names the baby Buddy Jr. after he was born. Evelyn, who is in her forties and feeling discontent with her own life’s direction, feels drawn into Nina’s story and feels a kinship to it.
