This small oval brooch belonged to my great great grandmother, and it was passed on to me when my grandmother passed away 3 years ago. It has been sitting in my jewelry box ever since. It just isn't my style, so I'm listing it here, hoping to find a good home for it.

The brooch is approximately 1 and 1/4 inches long and about 3/4 inch wide. It is definitely stone, I'm fairly certain this is a type of agate, but I'm not 100% positive. The colors are a mix of orange, white, and various shades of brown- perfect for fall! The highly polished stone is set on top of a brass oval setting with the "C" clasp. The picture I took is backwards because that is the only way I could get a good close up of the clasp. The pin part is bent (but still functional) and the sharp end sticks out past the edge of the brooch.

Late victorian/early edwardian piece

It's a beautiful piece, fan & watching. Sad that your getting rid of your ancestors gems, there apart of your family history.

I disagree. I think it is better that someone who would wear and enjoy this should have it. I have plenty of other items from my family that I use and enjoy. My family and I agree - what is the point of having something if it is kept tucked away in a drawer and nobody ever sees it, especially when I can use the credits to do something I truly love and enjoy? I think my ancestors would agree. You should read "A story to live by" By Ann Wells - life is meant to be lived in the present.

Lovely stone, so unusual! It was probably mined not far from where it was bought and may be restricted to an area. Do you know if your great-grandmother lived locally or did she come from a different area?
Watching and hopefully bidding! :)

She was born in Brooklyn, NY then as an adult moved here to Connecticut where she spent the rest of her life. So around the tri-state area

It's a painted agate. Very pretty. And if it's really that old, it most likely was cut, with a wet saw, sanded by hand, then the jeweler would put a shiny coating over it, to make it smooth and shiny.

Yes, it is very shiny and smooth.

Always love to know the history of something like this, a little of the 'story' that goes forward with it!

Many thanks to bridgetwes91185 for the name 'painted agate', which seems to be a secret known only to Americans, lol! I googled that and found a very similar stone, from Indiana. The only other similar one I've seen was set in a vintage brooch in the UK. Both lovely, but I like this one best of all! And whilst apologising profusely to the other bidders, I sooo hope to win this auction! :) You know that scene in the Return of the King when the eagles swoop down on the erupting volcano to save Frodo and Sam? That's what the picture in this agate looks like to me, a white eagle swooping down while everything bubbles and explodes behind it, epic!!! Thank goodness there's less than a day to go now, the suspense is killing me! ;) But whichever way this story ends, thank you so much purplesmurple for listing this beauty!
