"When Steam Ruled"
Steam Locomotives of the 1940s & 50s
DVD (60 minutes)
Harold Spicer was an award-winning photographer for the Baltimore News Post from 1939 to 1972. He had a passion for steam locomotives. In the 1940s and 50s, he had the foresight to take photographs and make audio recordings of these classic locomotives as they barreled across the rails of the Eastern USA. This 60-minute presentation includes 70 of his original still photos and sound recordings.
The DVD includes steam locomotives of the Baltimore and Ohio, New York Central, Pennsylvania, Ma & Pa, and Western Maryland railroads. You will see in amazing detail Mr. Spicer's entire photo collection of passenger trains, freights, and train wrecks. You will hear whistles blowing in signature style, bells ringing, pistons chugging, and wheels clicking and clacking over rail joints. In addition to feeling the rumble, you may even smell the coal smoke!
Harold Spicer's equipment included a 4x5 camera and wire recorder (forerunner of the tape recorder), both considered state-of-the-art 70 years ago. Mr. Spicer could not have imagined a future technology enabling rail fans around the world to enjoy his photos and recordings on one medium. He would be impressed and very proud. Whether for yourself or as a gift for your dad or spouse, this one-of-a-kind DVD is a true historic treasure.
