The listing, Purple Passion Plant AKA Velvet Plant has ended.
Native to Java, the Velvet plant (also Purple Velvet plant, Purple Passion) is a woody-based evergreen perennial that is noted for its velvety, purple-haired foliage. Can grow up to 9 feet long in container if not trimmed back. Pinch flowers off as they bud as they have unpleasant odor and are rather ugly.
Provide a purple passion plant with bright light. The bright light is necessary to encourage the purple highlights in the leaves and flowers to form.Too much direct sunlight can burn the plant, so if grown inside, grow in a west or east window or a south window with a transparent curtain. Outside, give the plant partial shade near a tree or on a porch. If the leaves are more green than purple, move the plant to a sunnier spot. You may want to plant in a container outside in warmer climates as the plant grows rapidly and is invasive, makes a good ground cover. Not a perinneal, will not come back next year in colder climates.
Keep the soil moist. Purple Passion Plant is a "fainter" if the soil is allowed to dry out. However, you can revive it quickly with a thorough watering. Aim to keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season, slightly drier in winter. Water the plant when the top of the potting mix begins to dry out. If grown outside, the plant may need water every day to keep the soil moist. I watered it every other day, was in small container and Iowa was experiencing drought all summer. Inside, the plant should be watered at least once a week.
Trim the ends of the stems regularly. This will cause the stems to branch, keeping the plant full, and increase the brilliance of the purple color. Feed every 2 weeks spring through fall with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted by half. Feed monthly in winter. I cheat and put Miracle Gro fertilizer sticks in pot.
