My problem is that I do not like using the wire ribbon only because it just seems more cheap looking but yet if I make the bows too big they come out flimsy, flat and not poofy at all, no matter what I do.

I know what you mean. I always pull my wire out. lol If you sell bows it's also hard to ship them without mashing them. :) The painted ribbons seem to hold their shape way better than the printed ribbons. That gives them more stiffness. :)
