No, it does not run on a battery. It runs just fine and charges off a charger. I have no idea how old it is but it has current maps on it. I don't know what the na stands for, It's part of the name I believe.
You do not need to connect to anything to use the maps already loaded into it. It works great. I used it in my car to find a few places in my home town to test it and it worked great. The maps seem up to date. I do not have a charger for it, but you can get them on Ebay really cheep. You can also get holders, map cards, etc on Ebay all for not much at all. The GPS is the most expensive, the attachments and extras go cheep.
I looked this gps up on line it takes the same charger that straight phone, blackberry, cingular ,motorola, nextel & tmobile cell phones take...also works with chargers from tom tom, usstarcom, htc,dopod, i-mate, mio, Q-tek & audio vox chargers....So if you got a charger form one of these it will work on this gps....
