456 PAGE HARDCOVER TEXT BOOK -ISBN 0-669-38633-2 Author: PDave Kemper,Ruth Nathan, Patrick Sebranek Publisher: Great Source Education Group Keywords: source, sourcebook, writing, reading Pages: 452 Published: 1995-12 Language: English ISBN-10: 0669386332 Binding: Hardcover Grades 4-5 + The Reading and Writing Sourcebook series is really excellent. The authors understand how to attract the learning mind. They offer many entry points into the skills of reading and writing, even providing lines alongside the reading text and encouraging students to write notes or draw pictures. Even to write or draw in the text! The colorful illustrations are part of the lessons. In each lesson there is a well-chosen excerpt to read and think about. There are exercises to get the student ready for the writing challenge, and there's a vocabulary building exercise. Then there's a short writing prompt eventually touching on all types of writing, including poetry.
These books would be perfect for home schooling or to put some substance in the lameness that passes for learning to read and write in most schools. Students can work through the lessons on their own; there's no need to teach. These books turned a reluctant writer to a confident, expressive writer who looks forward to the next lesson. I have recommended these books to other parents and teachers to universal acclaim. I'm mystified as to why they are not better known. The TABLE OF CONTENTS consist of 5 sections: The Process of Writing The Forms of Writing The Tools of Learning The Proofreader's Guide The Student Almanac
