Description

The listing, Beautiful 1923 Peace Dollar Except for a Few Black Spots on Reverse has ended.

This is the last dollar I won in this eBay lot: http://bitly.com/RxDKbk. This one is a 1923 Peace dollar which is nice on the portrait but has some funky black spots on the reverse. According to his post: https://www.kitcomm.com/showthread.php?t=71385, they are common in silver coins and might be removable with baking soda (I didn't try).

Tested as follows:

* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nbPlsWnoUs - ping test. All six dollars from my eBay lot have the base note on the ping or as I did, just drop them on the floor.

* Green silver acid test. My instructions for this green silver acid say if it is real silver, it is supposed to turn grey or milky grey. I scratched the edge of the coin on my testing stone and treated with the acid and it developed the gray and silky gray expected. This silver acid does not start red brown instead starts greenish grey.

* Red brown silver acid test. My instructions for this reddish silver acid say if it is real silver, it is supposed to turn brown if silver is 90%. I scratched the edge of the coin on my testing stone and treated with the acid and it developed the brownish color as expected.

* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiGrtLoJ2dY&feature=relat
ed - using 18K gold acid I also tested the coin. I scratched the edge of the coin on an acid stone. I got the the characteristic blue precipitate suggesting its silver.

* Strong magnet test - no attraction.

* Weight test - weighs 26.8 grams. A completely uncirculated coin supposed to be 26.73. but my scale doesn't go to the 100th gram. This is what my scale registered for my other very uncirculated Peace dollar. I guess it's inaccurate but close enough.

* Plating test - when I scratched the edge of the coin on the acid stone, it showed the same silver color underneath.

Free US shipping. No Canadian or International shipping. (Too expensive.) I 'm not into GINs at the moment. Sorry.

Why would you scratch, scrape, drop, ACID TEST, and attmept to clean an old coin that could be worth $$$? The 23's are common but still all these "tests" do nothing to help with the value. Take it to a professional who can look over the coin(s) the right way. Nice coin but for god's sake STOP doing all these homebrew tests!

I didn't clean the coin. THere is nothing wrong with dropping a sturdy coin like this. The acid test was done on a scrape from the edge of the coin which was the scrape test at the same time. I'm not going to go downtown and fight to get parking to bring some coins to a professional who might not want to give free advice. The coins are worth $$$ I agree. Hey I got them for $37 a piece. When I realized that was much lower than the going rate of $50 I became deadly worried about faking. Morgan and Peace dollars are the most faked coins in the world. I wanted to assure myself before putting these up for auction to Listia. As I said in another comment, selling these not professionally graded silver dollars is unrewarding. You are confirming it. I'm damned if I test and damned if I don't. I'm not doing any more tests. I'm convinced now. But thanks for your professional advice. I fanned you.

Up on further study, it turns out these coins are worth around the $37 that I paid for them after all.
