Actually as I look at it closer.. the whole thing is magnetic. Each link looks like the clasps and are black .. the links all stick together like a magnet. It's got more weight than you'd expenct from a necklace but it's not what you'd call a heavy piece. To answer you question i'm not sure it's either. It's an interesting piece.
