are the patterns already on the wood and all the kids have to do is color them in?

Yes. Just fill in with a bit if color. The box says for 6 and up. I painted a set like these when I was young. It takes a little time, but their for the family tree, so any mistakes could be overlooked. Plus, you can go over them later yourself and do touch ups.
