THE PLAINS OF HEAVEN by John Martin
The Plains of Heaven is a majestic painting, its scale and biblical landscape truly impressive. In many paintings by John Martin, perhaps the most popular painter of his age, man is dwarfed by the grandeur of a forbidding landscape, a reminder of the supremacy of God over mankind. In this painting of 1853, one part of a series of three works based on Revelations, the 'good' of the world have arrived in unearthly white clothing and are gathered together on the plains of heaven, with an awe-inspiring scene laid out in front of them. This indeed was paradise, and the sense of atmosphere is intense.
DID YOU KNOW?
Martin's brother Jonathon, who suffered from mentel illness most of his life, gained notoriety when he set fire to the magnificent York Minster in 1829. A local reporter said that the apocalyptic scene looked like a 'John Martin painting,' completely unaware of the family connection.
