About BEE BALM (Monarda):
Typically, bee balm is grown as an ornamental flower or to attract hummingbirds to the garden. The red flowering variety of Monarda is commonly known as Oswego Tea, but this one is the bright purple Violet Queen, which can be used the same way. The entire plant may be harvested for herbal tea or for beauty products. It was used by colonists in place of English Tea after the Boston Tea Party, when they threw the English tea in the harbor to protest the high taxes imposed on it by the British. Bee Balm was used as a medicinal plant extensively by Native Americans. As an herbal tea, it has a pleasant floral scent, with a slight licorice finish. It is used for the treatment of colds, catarrh, headaches, gastric disorders, gingivitis, and to soothe a sore throat. It also helps to relieve flatulence, nausea, menstrual pain, and insomnia. Relax and enjoy this rare, historic treasure! This is a perennial and comes back every year.
