Unusual carved pair of Foo Lions/Dogs depicted on double pedestals. Always carved in pairs, typically, the male lion has his right paw on a ball and the female has a single cub under her left paw. Symbolically, the male Foo Dog guards the structure, while the female protects those dwelling inside. For this carved pairing though, both are males with one foo dog’s right paw over the ball and the other foo dog’s left paw over the ball. Also odd is the type of stone used. Normally soapstone is used for carvings this small which would be kept indoors, but these were carved with a hardstone, in this case gray tiger stripe marble. Typically, large marbled carvings were kept outdoors. Added note-Foo lion/dog carvings with stripes are considered very good luck. So good luck bidding!
**Seen my share of carvings but these are very unique. You can see thru all 4 sides of the carvings. Amazingly intricate work & very painstakingly hard to do on hardstone without chipping or cracking.
