Description
The listing, Cancelled 3 Cent Connecticut's Charter Oak has ended.
Connecticut Tercentenary This stamp is one of only 4 commemoratives issued in 1935. It celebrates the founding of the colony of Connecticut in 1635. The design shows the Charter Oak, considered sacred to the Native Americans so the colonists didn't chop it down. Legend says that in 1667, when King James II demanded the surrender of the charter granted earlier by Charles II, as the charter was to be handed over to the king's representative, the lights went out and the charter was gone, to be hidden in the Charter tree. A storm felled the tree 150 years later. The wood was used to make the Connecticut Governor’s desk and chairs for the State Speaker of the House and State Senate President.
The photo shown is not an actual photo of the stamp in the auction, but a photo found on the Internet.
