If you want my opinion on this, I would say Sony did the wrong thing by not making it compatible with the older models. This is one of the reasons big companies like Sony can go under someday. You don't change what doesn't need to be change.

Apple, on the other hand may get "some" folks upset with its changes. But the changes that Apple does are actually beneficial to its users. This headphones thing was a bad marketing mistake on Sony's part. You don't do stuff like that! Oh well, the PS3 is still a great system, though. So can't complain! :D

Will these work with a mp3? Or are these only made for psp?

Sorry, they are specifically made only for the Sony PSP model numbers PSP-2000 and PSP-3000 and that's it. The reason is because it uses a special plug that's proprietary to these models only.
