Description

The listing, Vintage 18k Gold Filled and Onyx or Black Thermoset Ring has ended.

Very nice vintage circa 1960's 18k G.F. ring with a black stone that is either Onyx, Jet, or thermoset. Looks more like Thermoset to me. Extremely clean with no scratches whatsoever. Very nice filigree setting around the stone. Looks like solid gold. I guess it could be as I have not tested it and it is not magnetic. My guess is its GF though. I bought it as I listed it and it certainly looks like 18k as the gold has a nice darker tone to it.

Thanks. My feedback isnt that bad peptaz. I got negative from 1 person I sent their item to. Also I forgot to send a couple items when I first joined but I refunded their credits and communicated with the buyer through the process. People shouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions.

Why would you think the filligree was anything but what the ring says (markings?) is it. You say "18 k gold-filled", then say it "looks like solid gold". What does the "dark tone" have to do with anything? Gold can become darker through the process of patina. Finally, why would someone cast an "18k gold filled" ring and use a manufacturing polymer in place of a stone? I've studied gems for decades and have never heard of "Thermoset". Good reason, as after Googling it, it isn't used in jewelry - it's a plastic used in manufacturing.

Where did you get the information that this was even 18k gf? Would you show a clear photo of the mark please? Also, how did you come by the age? Thank you.

Ok so.... Its not marked, test's with acid to 18k, fading out the scratches slowly but leaving behind the gold specks up to 18k. It is not magnetic. Could be heavy plated gold over sterling I guess. Either way its the same value wise. Thermoset is actually a very commonly used plastic type material, used in many popular vintage jewelry sets. Maybe thats why you didnt learn it in your g.i.a. class. So anyway, in my experience this type of ring would usually be gf and not plated. Also has a few scratches and no visible discoloration of the gold is noticable. I understand your scepticism but this is a very beautiful ring.

Starbaby, you sind quite foolish. How is it that you're a self proclaimed jewelry expert and yet you had no idea that thermoset is plastic used in vintage jewelry? Lol. You shouldn't act like an expert when you don't even know a simple common thing such as that. Uhm... That would be why I put onyx or thermoset in the title because I was trying NOT to misrepresent the ring. ? When did I say thermoset is a precious gem??

Not like I'm asking 500$ for this ring Starbaby. I will probably lose money on the shipping alone. OK so I'm going to stop now. Sry for not previously listing the size guys. I always forget that!

Ever heard of Coro, J.J., Juliana, almost every popular vintage fashion jewelry designer used thermoset in many colors, varieties.....sigh....

Craig, I never said I was a "jewelry expert" - I said I've studied for decades. I am far from an expert, but I know a lot. I also never accused you of saying it was a precious gem. I simply asked a question. I opened the first 2 pages of Google results (20 - 30 sites?) and saw nothing saying it was used in anything but manufacturing.

It was used in vintage jewelry. I have a couple of pieces of very beautiful thermoset necklaces. Most people don't recognize that they aren't actually some type of gem until I invite them to touch the stones. They are pretty groovy!!!
