Is this the thing I need to update my TomTom from the computer? I am so lost on updating it and don't have a clue how to do it.

Yes....bring your gps in the house and with this cable you connect it to your computer....and follow the instructions that pop up......go on line if you don't have your guide that came with it and it will tell you what numbers you need from your unit......all the info stays on your computer (barring a crash) and your computer will tell you when new updates are ready.....its a pretty good system.....good luck
