The listing, antique tobacco pipe has ended.
antiue tobacco pipe. slightly used but has been cleaned out, as good as possible. i don't smoke or use these so i didn't have the proper stuff to clean it out with. u may be able to get it cleaner with proper cleaning solution. in good condition, as seen in pics.
I beg to disagree with the lister - - this MeersChaum (note the "c") pipe is in terrific condition !! DO NOT use anything other than a special knife that is made specifically for cleaning meerschaum pipe bowls - - and especially, do NOT use any LIQUIDs to clean the interior of the bowl or the exterior of the pipe - - EXCEPT the stem (but only when unscrewed from the bowl).
A detailed how-to is online ยป http://www.smokingpipes.com/information/howto/meerschaum.cfm
i haven't done anything to this pipe except dust it off with a dry rag. it was in this condition when i got it. but thank you so much for the information on it.
I had a pipe like this when I was a teen! I think it is Meershaum. Thanks for listing. I can't fan you because of ' fan limit', but please fan me! Thanks!
Thanks for the update! Yes, I'd like to see the case, if you don't mind. I thought it was Meershaum, that was a big deal back in the '70's! I think they were 25-30$ back then. It is a very nice piece! Thanks!
Meerschaum is a highly porous mineral that is mined in only a very small are of Turkey - - all meerschaum pipes are hand-carved. The outer surface is coated with thin layers of BEESWAX - - this causes the pipe to change colours from the originally mined white to rich tones of orange and red, mostly dependent on the properties of the tobacco smoked in the pipe. For that purpose, meerschaum lovers usually wear white cotton gloves when handling their favourites so that fingerprints and dirt artifacts are not left behind in the beeswax coating.
If the beeswax is worn off, it can be replaced/renewed with a very detailed and complicated process using your home microwave oven, brushes and a supply of very clean, clear pure honey- - and this should never be done using convection or conventional ovens. I make stands to hold my pipes out of old coat hangers that have been bent to fit into an upside-down pipe bowl and to hold it upright in the microwave. The pipe must rest - unhandled - for a minimum of 2 days between application of beeswax layers.
The "amber" stem can be gas autoclaved (doesn't EVERYONE have one of those?). Much easier to live with is a trip to your local tobaccanist where there is usually a good supply of new and sanitary replacement stems that you can mark up with your own teeth instead of wondering what might be growing in the pores of the stem that comes with this pipe.
This pipe style, btw, is called a "Sultan" - - The fitted case seems to have done its job well for this meerschaum pipe. With a bit of looking around, the winner of the auction can probably find a nice replacement for the case if the "war torn" look is not desired. IMHO this is definitely a "keeper" !!!!
seems you know your pipes really well. i had no info on this pipe at all. so it is really nice to learn more history about it. i really hope someone that will appreciate it will win it. it has been stored up for the last year. my husband and i dont smoke for pipes, i don't smoke at all. thought it would make for a good conversational peice. but no one around me knew anything about it either. it seems to be a really interesting peice, i hope it can be enjoyed from someone here on listia. thanks for the information on it.
