In Hawaii, the flower is known as Pikake, and are used to make fragrant leis. The name 'Pikake' is derived from the Hawaiian word for "Peacock", because the Hawaiian Princess Kaʻiulani was fond of both the flowers and the bird. **PHOTO # 1 & 2 On the red background are the Actual Necklace Up For Auction !! Photo # 3 is of a Pikake Lei..Real Flowers...Photo # 4 is an Antique Pikake Necklace made of Ivory.. These were made of Ivory, Whale bone, Animal Bone..such as Wild Boar (Tusk)..and Ox-Bone.. Wait** No Oxen or Elephants in Hawaii ? Well, in the 1800's Lahaina, Maui was One of The Capital Whaling Ports in The World..Henceforth..Trading..Ivory for Fruits, pig..etc. Again Very Nice Detail...This is carved of some form of ivory..or tusk. The round beads are irregular shaped, and each flower is different from the other..like a snowflake..The Necklace is strung on double row of string..another sign of older jewelry. It is not loose, or coming apart. The length from clasp to clasp is 17 1/4 " Long . This is from the late 30's to mid 40's. Ok..Being a Tour guide really helped..plus the History of Hawaii is Amazing..Too bad we don't teach more of it in Maindland Schools..but then they'd have to tell the truth about how we imprisoned a Queen in her own Palace to take over..etc..Oh I miss The Aina :( Thanks for comment..

I love the history of Hawaii and all that is Hawaiian. I have been reading lots of books about the true Hawaii. i just finished Molokai. Excellent book and sad at the same time. I am definately keeping my fingers crossed as I collect all Hawaiian artifacts.

This is unique very few carved pikake any more..except upper end jewelry stores. I will be posting some other pieces later in the week.Thank you..Molokai is 1 of the still most untouched city in the USA. 1 Traffic light on whole island no fast foods or Chain stores..and only way there plane or boat..one of my Favorite Islands..
