Grueling action hits home with director John McTiernan's remake Rollerball. MGM has done an excellent job with this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The colors and black levels are all solid and well-formed with only the slightest amount of edge enhancement seeping into the picture. Overall, this is a crisp-looking transfer that should please fans. Also included on this disc is a standard 1.33:1 full-frame transfer. The audio is presented in a bone-crunching Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround mix that is aggressive, loud, and thoroughly bombastic. Directional effects envelop the viewer throughout the entire film while the dialogue, music, and effects come in crystal-clear. Also included on this disc are subtitles in English, French, and Spanish, as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround soundtracks in French and Spanish. While Rollerball bombed upon its initial theatrical release, this hasn't stopped MGM from releasing a special edition of the film on DVD. Starting out this disc's extra features is a commentary track by actors Chris Klein, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, and LL Cool J. This commentary is endlessly amusing, featuring funny stories, asides, and comments about the film (sadly, LL Cool J's track was recorded separately, making for a sometimes jaded conversation). "The Stunts of Rollerball," a 20-minute featurette, is an exciting look into how many of the special effects and stunts were achieved featuring interviews with multiple members of the crew. Finally, there is an "Interactive Yearbook" with information on the equipment, teams, and characters, along with a music video by shock rocker Rob Zombie and two theatrical trailers for the film.
