I purchased a bunch of patterns this past summer at an estate sale. I then purchased a new sewing machine in the hopes of learning to sew. HAHA I can't figure out how to use the sewing machine. I tried several times with no luck. It now sits in the closet.

Ohhh brother's are easy to use...just practice practice practice. When in doubt read the manual...you can also ask questions at their web-site. I have 3 brothers, a kenmore (antient work horse machine) and a Singer. Just gotta play around with it is all.

I cant seem to get the tension set right. I always end up with a big mess of thread under the material. I assume from the bobbin.

Do you have a drop in bobbin or one of the metal bobbin holder that you put the bobbin case?

I have a bobbin spool that I sit down in the machine under a plate.

Is there a year listed on the envelope? It may be on the flap on the side of the envelope. F&W!

Ok...it's like my newer one then. Make sure that your bobbin thread is spinning the same direction as your top thread, and make sure you're putting your bobbin in the direction the pic on the plate shows and your running it around the little loop thing just under the plate until it cuts the string off to the right length. If that doesn't work, try moving the upper thread tension just a touch at a time towards a highter number. The weight of your fabric makes a difference too...for lighter weight I usually have to tighten mine to a higher tension...heavier it is the lower the tension. The other thing to check is if the bobbin case (the gray thing you drop the bobbin in) is in all the way. Use your fingers and try spinning it lightly and slowly to the left and listen for a click.

OK....maybe I am putting it in backwards then. The tension makes since as well. I'll get it out next week and try on a sample fabric :-)
