No. 5 of 6 Summer Palace postcards mailed from Reno, Nev., in 1996. This card's photographic illustration is of a sunk (recessed) panel of the Long Gallery or Long Corridor.

The Long Gallery was first built by Emperor Qianlong about 1750 for his mother so that she could walk outdoors and view the gardens regardless of the. It was destroyed in 1860 and rebuilt in 1886. The Empress Dowager Cixi also liked to walk here daily after breakfast. This corridor was constructed along the natural terrain of Longevity Hill and the turns of Kunming Lake, offering a picturesque view with each step. It featured 273 "rooms" in the space between the columns that support the roof. In the center is the Gate of Dispelling Clouds.

The Long Gallery is famous for the 14,000 Su-style paintings on every beam and cross-member. The paintings served to protect the wood structures from insects, rain, wind and sunlight. Because of its length and abundance of paintings, the Long Gallery was included in the Guinness Book of Records in the early 1900s.

Each of the six Summer Palace postcards I'm listing also features one of the four carousel horses released as U.S. postage stamps in 1995 as part of a series on Folk Art.
