The listing, Alyssum, Lobularia maritima - American Seed Company has ended.
Alyssum, Lobularia maritima
It is an annual plant (rarely a short-lived perennial plant) growing to 5–30 cm (2–12 in) tall by 20–30 cm (8–12 in) broad. The stem is very branched, with dense clusters of small flowers. The leaves are 1-4 cm long and 3-5 mm, broad, alternate, sessile, quite hairy, oval to lanceolate, with an entire margin.
The flowers are sweet-smelling, with four white rounded petals (or pink, rose-red, violet and lilac) and four sepals. The flowers are produced throughout the growing season, or year-round in areas free of frost. They are pollinated by insects (entomophily). The fruits are numerous elongated seedpods rather hairy, oval to rounded, each containing two seeds. The dispersal of seed is effected by the wing (anemochory)
Beloved for its sweet honey scent, this easy, fast bloomer is one of the best attractors of beneficial insects and butterflies. Tiny insect predators that protect the garden from chewing insects need small, nectar-rich flowers, and sweet alyssum is a favorite. Perfect for cascading down walls or containers, as a low edging (esp. with cabbage family), or as a carpet under tall, relatively open plants like onions, garlic, orach, pole beans, podding radish and sunflowers. Succession-sow, spring to fall.
Use 4" spacing in the bed.
