Questions & Comments
Not until the 1930's huh? I did not know that.. Being that arrows have been around for a long long time I would have assumed earlier, and would have been wrong.. I wonder what they used to call them? Just feathers?
So...How 'Bout That Fletching Eh'? Definition of FLETCHING : the feathers on an arrow; also : the arrangement of such feathers First Known Use of FLETCHING circa 1930 In Case Anyone Is Intrested
hahaha...yea, feathers been around for a bit, indeed. Just the word Fletching is rather new. Heck... Most folks don't know this little factoid either>> The name WENDY...did not exist until Peter Pan Was written....true trivia.
And also in case anyone didn't know, which I'm assuming you all do.. But to answer SleepyBunny's earlier question Morgan's are 90% silver, net wt- 26.73oz, net silver wt.- .77344 of a Troy oz.
That's ok.. I ment to write fletching, not feather. It would the veins/feathers on the back of the arrows. There's just a variety for the 1879, & I was wondering if this was one of them. It would be called the reverse of the 1878.. Where they used the dies from the 1878 Morgan's to make some of the '79's. the fletching on the 1878's was parallel the whole way, while (most) of the 1879's the fletching tapers up from right to left... So if the top fletching is flat all the way across it was a 1878 die used, and therefore rarer, while if it tapers up, from skinny to thick then it's the 1879 die. No big deal, you don't have to check it out if its too much trouble. I actually really like the keychain.. Lol... Usually they destroy the coin, while yours does not.. Therefore I could put one of my toner (rainbow like my avatar pic) in the keychain without destroying it.. Lol.
well thanks for all that info....very interesting..I would be happy to send you another pic to your email if you leave it for me...so you can further investigate the fletching...:)
Did the keychain leave any marks on the rim of the coin? I can't tell with the glare on the reverse photo, is the top feather (closest to the eagle) on the top arrow parallel to the one below it or does it start skinny and get thicker to the left? It looks to be about a VF, hard to tell from the photos, might slide into an EF... I have an almost complete set of Morgan's minus the super keys (have a PCGS VF '89cc though, first key I bought..:) .. But I have many doubles & am always looking for more for my silver stack and VAM searching. All I do all day long is "play" with and grade coins ;) I love my job, Lol. Hmmm... To bid or not to bid...
Hi PreludeASE ...I am sorry to say I am not as educated in the knowledge of coins as you are..I found this particular coin in a box of war medals years ago..those items are long gone, but I hung onto this. I can see no marks what so ever on the edgdes of this coin..as for the feather..I do see one...lol. I can try to get a better pic for you..my camera is not the greatest..but I will post another one within the hour. If you decide to bid..I thank you...and good luck!! :)
