the reluctant suitor: Sixteen years ago, two old friends tried to sign a betrothal agreement between their children - 17-year-old Colton Wyndham and seven-year-old Adriana Sutton. Colton, young and on the verge of independence, absolutely refused to be told what to do. He left home rather than sign the agreement. His family signed it in his place, allowing him a three-month period of time for courtship before the betrothal became official. If after three months, he was determined not to marry, there would be no betrothal. He went off and joined the army, spending the next years advancing in the ranks in the fight to oust Napoleon.
Adriana, a mere snippet of a tomboy, grew into a beautiful young woman. As she grew she realized she thought of Colton in almost a "hero-worship" way. Hearing his rejection and some of the spiteful things he said, she was devastated by Colton's rejection. In respect of their parents' wishes and a good excuse to keep her distance, she continued to use the signed agreement as a means to keep suitors at bay. It is her hope that when he returns he will love her back.
It is now 1815, the war is over, and Adriana is being pursued by many, including an heir to a dukedom and a lowly miller's apprentice. Can they finally find love?

Shades of the Past:It is not so often that I come across, in my opinion, such a great Victorian Gothic mystery ! I have found here, absolutely everything I could hope for and beyond ... Hidden family secrets, scandal, passion, jealousy, deception and murder, a very nasty constable and a Ghost ! From the very beginning this story grabs you and throws you into a whirlwind of very powerful emotions. Royal Sherringham, ancient seat of the Viscounts Marrable has its very own identity and importance. It is heavily charged with history, each architectural details has its significance and memories. Kathleen Kirkwood described in beautiful detail the majestic house in such a way that it magically came to life before my eyes. Ms. Kirwood provides just the right amount of detail, which add an incredible dimension to the story, creating a bizarre, spellbinding and unique atmosphere that pulls you in.

A Midwinters Tale: A Midwinter's Tale is the beginning of a new series for Andrew Greeley, and the main character, Chucky O'Malley is one of his best ever! Chucky literally comes of age during the Depression and WWII, and his growing up in an Irish Catholic famiy in Chicago is a fine tale indeed. His bright wit and charm are irresistable to women, particularly his sister Peg's best friend, Rosemarie(Rosie)Clancy-who are more or less taken in by the O'Malley's due to her own mother's drinking problem and her investment banker father is rarely at home. But the real fun and action begins when after high school graduation Chucky serves in the Army Constabulary in post-war Germany. The story is one you will breeze through, anxiously awaiting the next installment of the series. Highly recommended.
