Description

The listing, Heirloom Dill ✽ LONG ISLAND MAMMOTH ✽ 15 Seeds ✽ Organic Herb has ended.

An old time favorite, Long Island Mammoth is a vigorous plant that matures quickly. Large umbels are covered with masses of seed. Use as an herb for cooking or canning, or plant to attract butterflies. They are a valuable host plant for the Black Swallowtail Butterfly. I get many complements on the beauty of this plant mixed in my flower bed. Plant in succession throughout the season for an abundant crop. Cover with floating row crop covers if growing for culinary use only. I only water my seeds and seedlings, as they tend to be very drought tolerant. They are an annual in colder zones, but will self-seed for many years of enjoyment. I believe the "strong shall survive" in my garden. You will appreciate my motto!

Family: Apiaceae (ay-pee-AY-see-ee)

24-36 in.

This Auction: You will be receiving 15 seeds from my garden. They will be sent First Class mail. I am happy to say that my seeds tested 99-100% germination within 2 weeks at a temp of 65°F in the spring of 2012. Excellent for beginners!
Propagation Method: From seed, sow seeds indoors 6 weeks before last spring frost. Sow 3-5 seeds per pot. About 10 days before the last spring frost, begin hardening the plants to the outdoors. Transplant your plants to a sunny location.

Little farmers can use it too. It is like a white piece af gardeners fabric that still lets rain and sun through, but is small enough weave that insects can't get through to lay eggs on plants that you might want to harvest to eat or sell at market. I like the Black Swallowtail caterpillars, so I don't worry about them. I just check the plants closely before eating.

I always planted mine to raise butterflies. I love the Black Swallowtails, so I don't mind them there. I figure there are enough plants for me AND the butterflies. LOL
