It's not a lost cause. The discs are still nice to have because it means the gamer won't have to download the whole game.

Got this from Blizzard's website -
Accounts cannot be transferred. You'll need to purchase your own and link it to your Battle.net account. The games themselves (media) are all the same, it's the authentication key that you need which can only be used a single time to add a license to a Battle.net account

Looks like the game can't be played if it's a used copy. :(
