Yes fully functional only used twice.

Those gels - are they a requirement?

... Meaning, if you took them off (or if you CAN take them off), do they look exactly like iPod earbuds? Or are they shaped for an ear canal?

Yes the Gels or covers of your choosing are needed. They fit over a small speaker shaft around 5.95mm which is too small to fit in your ear (unless your an infant). This allows it to fit snugly into the ear. Now the Gels I am including are silicone but there are covers made from either Foam or Cloth. They will fit over the speaker shaft and contour to the shape of the ear somewhat in the same fashion that the Gels do.
