There were pennies minted at all three mints in 1912. The coins from the Denver mint have a D mint mark. The coins from the San Francisco mint have an S mint mark. The coins from the Philadelphia mint do not carry a mint mark on them but are referred to as 1912 P so no one has to ask about the mint to know what coin you are talking about. It's a matter of semantics. The coin was minted in Philadelphia (That mint did not place mint marks on coins at the time) and the P designation means that's where it came from.
