Occupation of Poland
The occupation of Poland began with an agreement between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in 1939. According to the pact, Germany would be allowed to invade Poland without Soviet interference. Eastern Poland was then annexed by the Soviet Union. In summer-autumn of 1941 the lands annexed by the Soviets were overrun by Nazi Germany in the course of the initially successful German attack on the USSR. Germany's occupation concluded with the defeat of Nazism by the Allies (which included the USSR) in May 1945. German administration was called the "Generalgouvernement" (General Government) Polish stamps with Third Reich overprint were used until early 1940 when Nazi Generalgouvernement stamps were issued.
