(2) Catalpa Trees:
Large, showy white, trumpet-shaped flowers grace the Catalpa in late spring. Its narrow crown is oval-shaped or uneven, upright with distinctively large, heart-shaped, bright green leaves and long, bean-like pods. Withstands wet, dry, alkaline soils and hot, dry environments, but prefers moist, deep soil. Sun or partial shade. Grows to 40'-60' with a 20'-40' spread. (Zones 4-8)

(2) Crape (Crepe) Myrtle Trees:
Crape myrtle is an upright deciduous tree or large shrub. Dark green leaves emerge bronze. White, pink, red, or purple flowers appear from summer to autumn. Peeling gray-and-brown bark is attractive.
Noteworthy characteristics: Hybrids of L. indica and L. fauriei vary greatly in size, habit, hardiness, and resistance to powdery mildew.
Care: Thrives in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Grow against a warm, sunny wall where marginally hardy or overwinter in a greenhouse. Can be hard pruned if renovation is required.

(2) Hawthorn Trees:
Pink, red or white flowers in early June start the color show. Reddish-purple leaves turn dark green, then orange, scarlet or purple. Small, glossy red fruits stay on tree into winter, and are preferred by songbirds. Grows to 25' to 30', 25' spread. (zones 4-8)

Hawthorn is a showy, small tree, the hawthorn breaks into clouds of white, pink or red flowers in spring, followed by vivid fall color, and long-lasting red winter fruits. The fruits, which resemble rosehips, stand out in a snowbound landscape. Robins sometimes line the branches in mid- to late-winter, harvesting the fruits.

Crape myrtles are among the brightest blooming and most heat-tolerant trees available. Their array of summer blossoms is complemented by sculptural trunks and gold or red fall foliage. The contrast of reddish peeling bark and smooth trunk provides winter interest, too. By planting crape myrtles against a warm, sunny wall, colder-climate gardeners can also enjoy this traditional Southeastern favorite.
