**Even though the ukulele was always considered an instrument to accompany other instruments, Mrs. Breen worked to develop it into a solo instrument. She was married to composer Peter de Rose, and for 16 years they were known as the "Sweethearts of the Air". Both were pioneers in radio and television. It was through the efforts of Mrs. Breen that the Musicians' Union finally agreed to recognize the ukulele as a legitimate musical instrument. She also succeeded in having the standard (D) tuning accepted and it is used throughout this book**
"Uke can play the melody," was a favorite saying of May Singhi Breen
