The listing, 2 Winners Auction Vintage Rhinestone or Cameo Earrings and Yankee Candle Air Fresheners has ended.

*******Please read description before bidding. :) **********

2 different people will win this auction

This is an auction asking Listia members for a favor in identifying a large charm that I have and an auction for a choice of the very pretty earrings in the 1st pic.

Here is how it will work-
High bidder get the choice of cameo or rhinestone flower earrings from 1st picture.

The person that comments with the most valuable information concerning my mans face charm will get to pick a pair of earrings from the 12th picture or I will send you a pack of Yankee Candle car air freshers.

Hope I haven't confused anyone.

Stay tuned for my comments and I work full time so it may not be til that evening that I get back

Thanks Listia members!!

I was thinking about the same as Iltrain. it does look like ghandi made from soapstone. at first i thought it was a mourning cameo. and myersmaria might be right too!, it may contain relics of the person it was made to honor. Very neat stuff my dear!!

A little history on the charm that I have- I bought it at an antique store for $5 and took it to a pawn shop to see if the gold was real and they said it's probably 18-24k. The face looks like a man from China and the writing looks like Indian?? I don't know and can't make it out. I also don't know what the material is either and don't know where to start looking for comparisons like this on line.

Hi, I agree with the mourning or religious relic. I've seen similar in later victorian versions that's the reason it is so thick. Pendants and rings. Today, rings are made with a loved ones ashes inside. My husband is a jeweler and has made these.

Thanks for the comment. I wish my husband was a jeweler! :)

My first thought was a mourning cameo. These were very popular throughout Europe, the Middle and the Far East in the era of George III through Victoria. Traditionally the bas relief image was carved from native stone in the Middle East and Far East. In Europe it was more often metal. In any case, they did normally contain a relic (bone shard, nail clippings, hair clippings) obtained from the departed when they were prepared for burial. The back usually, at least in the European version, had the name of the deceased, dates, and often a romantic verse or scripture notation. If this is of a religious leader, then it would be properly termed a Religious Relic.

I think the charm is a carving of Mahatma Gandhi and the script is Gujarati.
An expert in the languages of India should be able to translate. Maybe try a university linguistics department.

1. What is the cameo made of?
2/ Does the man have any markings on the gold?
3. You can go to the Antique Road Show on the internet and send them pictures of the man and ask them what they think.

I believe it is carved soapstone or stone of that range. Is the back design carved into the stone or the stone carved away leaving the design? The symbols look arabic but not positive.
Apr 15th, 2013 at 10:54:30 PM PDT by
Original
On the back the stone is carved away leaving the design. I'll look up Arabic writing and compare it to that,. Thanks!
