PreSchool-K-- Bernard, a garden gnome, sits as still as a statue while "fishing and thinking" by a pool. The joke inherent in the simple text is that nature is constantly abuzz with activity even when nothing seems to be happening. In fact, Bernard is the only object that remains fixed throughout; the bright watercolors provide the action when Maris' familiar half-pages are flipped. The insects and animals of the pond and surrounding shoreline are engaged in everyday activities (spinning a web, looking for food) and mini-dramas (escaping attack, chasing away the cat). All the while, Bernard remains in the same position with the same simpering expression and the text tells readers that "nothing ever happens by the poolnd ." Perhaps useful as an exercise in observation skills, this is an otherwise unsuccessful story. Although the inanimate gnome seems incapable of feeling any emotion at all--least of all boredom--he's apt to produce more than a few yawns.
